UCTAC’s Melissa Baines recognized for outstanding service to the UC community
Licensing Associate Melissa Baines has been with UC for over 13 years, the past six with UCTAC after having spent seven years in the UC Office of General Counsel. This past April 14, Melissa was recognized with an Excellence in Service award during UC’s Second Annual Celebration of Black Excellence. The Celebration honors African American employees who provided distinguished service to the University during the previous academic year. Melissa was honored not only for her lengthy service to UC, but also for her continually increasing success in licensing certain UC technologies known as “research tools.”
Transgenic mice, cell lines and other research reagents or “research tools” may not be the first thing you think of when you think of the UCTAC, but since 2015, Melissa has negotiated a number of research tool agreements with industry partners that resulted in over $500,000 of revenue for the University. Eager to build on these past successes, Melissa continues to market UC research tools, and seek out additional partners. In addition to out-licensing research tools, Melissa also manages both confidentiality and material transfer agreements for UCTAC on behalf of University researchers.
